What’s the Deal with Oktoberfest?
September is a huge month for bier, and while the month’s name doesn’t suggest it, it is the time for Oktoberfest! This Bavarian tradition dates all the way back to 1810 in Munich, at the marriage celebration of Crown Prince Ludwig to Princess Therese of Saxony-Hildburghausen. This festival usually begins during the third weekend in September, and ends the first Sunday of October.
At the first few Oktoberfest festivals, bier stands were set up to quench the thirst of the onlookers of the now discontinued horseraces. The bier drinking part of the experience continued to grow in the subsequent years and ultimately, became one of the centerpieces of the celebration. Oktoberfest is now one of the largest festivals in the world and serves over 2 million gallons of bier each year!
And Café Bavaria won’t be the only one celebrating…
With all of this in mind, we have curated bier lists for all of our Lowlands Grand Cafés, which highlight the delicious beers that make Oktoberfest so unique. There will be true, German, Oktoberfest biers, as well as Oktoberfest-inspired biers made right here in Wisconsin. Fall pumpkin bier fans don’t fret, however—in addition to the Oktoberfest biers, there will be pumpkin stouts and pumpkin ales added to our seasonal beer offering. It’s never too early to start craving some pumpkin pie!
